Racist, or Realistic, Remarks
February 25, 2010 - 09:28 — Jane Wylen (not verified)In your review of "Game Change," you mention Reid's "racist" remark that Obama's victory was possible because he is light-skinned and does not have negroid features. This is not a racist remark; it is the truth. Perhaps you do not have the history with racism I have; I am 72 years old and grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, which was a segregated city at the time.
After Brown v. Board of Education, my school (Wilmington Friends) admitted its first black student, Jane Bond (the sister of Julian Bond). People threatened to take their children out of school, in spite of the fact that her father was the president of a university. However, when Jane came to a Meeting for Worship prior to the beginning of school, they changed their minds. Like Obama, Jane is light-skinned and does not have negroid features. This made all the difference.
Oh and, by the way, loved your podcast. I am going to tell Slate's Cultural Gabfest that they now have a very serious rival for my affections.
The Americans, by Jeffrey Gorra?
February 25, 2010 - 09:48 — Jane Wylen (not verified)Do you intend to print a transcript of your podcast? I can not figure out how to spell Gorra, and I can't find The Americans on Amazon.
