Unconsidered trifles
SIMON HOGGART devotes his Guardian column today to famous faux pas, including one from the actor John Gielgud when Glenda Jackson and Gyles Brandreth gave him lunch at the House of Commons to celebrate his 90th birthday in 1994.
"It's so kind of you to take me to lunch", Gielgud said to them, "You see, all my real friends are dead."
And while we're on the subject of good one-liners, here (courtesy of today's FT) is an exchange from Harold Pinter's play, "The Hothouse", newly revived at the National Theatre in London:
- "Wobbles when she walks?"
- "Oh, possibly a trifle, sir."
